Past and Present: A Digital History of Wisconsin Independent Colleges and Universities
The images in this collection have been selected from the archives of Wisconsin independent colleges and universities, and their affiliates. Representing only a small portion of the available resources, the selection details the history of these institutions through photos, documents, and objects created between the 1800s and early 1900s. Later content will include history from the mid-1900s to the present. With Past and Present, we celebrate the rich heritage of each institution. The collection answers frequently asked questions through the use of primary resources and narrative descriptions. Highlighting the people and events of an earlier time, it preserves the historical record and makes it available to a greater audience.
A collaborative effort, Past and Present was designed and produced by archivists and librarians from these participating Wisconsin institutions: Alverno College, Cardinal Stritch University, Carthage College, Concordia University, Edgewood College, Lakeland College, Lawrence University, Marian University, Marquette University, Nashotah House Ripon College, Silver Lake College, St. Norbert College, and Viterbo University.

An Era of Progress and Promise is a book compiled by W.N. Hartshorn of Clifton, Massachusetts, that celebrates the "religious, moral, and educational development of the American Negro since his emancipation." An Era of Progress and Promise is a culmination of the Clifton conference findings and provides a comprehensive portrait of early African-American schools, colleges, and churches as well as biographies of African-American educators, ministers, and influential businessmen. An Era of Progress and Promise is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of education, the development of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the Negro Business League, religion in the United States, or African-American society in post-Emancipation America.

School of Art & Art History Graduate Archive Digital Collection
For the past seventy-five years, the School of Art and Art History has collected thousands of artworks by artists attending the School's graduate studio programs. Each graduate student was asked to leave behind a work they completed during their graduate studies at the University of Iowa. The School of Art and Art History Graduate Archive contains over 6,000 paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and other art objects. Within the last few years, the School has been collecting slides and digital images from our graduate students while the students can still donate works to the collection. The Archive is unique in the country and provides a critical overview of the developments in American art over much of the last century. The quality of the Archive is remarkable, reflecting the extraordinary reputation of the School and its graduate alumni. The Archive contains works by notable artists who studied at the School, including painter Ellen Lanyon, whose work can be seen at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago; Elizabeth Catlett, famous African-American sculptor; Miriam Shapiro, painter/sculptor, co-originator of the feminist art program at the California Institute of Arts, and co-founder of the Feminist Art Institute of New York City; Thomas Lawton, retired director of the Freer Gallery of Chinese Art; and Roy Sieber, former co-director of the Museum of African Art, both of the Smithsonian Institutions, among many, many others. The School of Art and Art History has played a crucial role in the history of American art. The University was among the first in the country to unite studio art, art history, and art education, and it remains among the relatively few major research universities to offer art history and studio courses in the same academic unit. With its national profile, the School of Art and Art History is one of the University of Iowa's premier programs, ranked the sixth-best art school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. The School of Art and Art History continues to bring distinction to the University and to the state of Iowa.

Calvin Photographs Digital Collection
During the mid-1800s, photography became a popular hobby and natural tool for scientists. Samuel Calvin (1840-1911), a professor in natural sciences at the University of Iowa (1873-1911) and a state geologist, took more than 5,000 photographs, which he used to illustrate geological features for class instruction, public lectures, and publications. A portion of his photographs are included in this digital collection, complete with subject and location information when available. In addition to documenting purely geological features, Calvin and his colleagues photographed mines, quarries, mills, buildings, people, and the University of Iowa campus.
